True/False Film Festival in Columbia, MO
When a film festival promotes itself as “Exploring fact, fiction and what lies between,” that gets attention. The True/False Film Festival was organized ten years ago to prove that many documentaries are alive, fascinating and highly entertaining. And to make you a true believer, the Festival’s HQ will be at the Cherry Street Artisan Café where panel discussions, conversations and an interactive “video confessional” will be free and open to the public.

First Night Columbia 2013: The Night Is Young
Want to celebrate the New Year with the entire family? Are you looking for New Year’s fun and a variety of activities, entertainment and excitement without alcohol? Then plan to spend December 31, 2012 in Columbia, Missouri at the First Night Columbia Celebrations! The event theme this year is The Night Is Young to emphasize the inclusion of all young people in our annual celebration.
First Night celebrations began in Boston in 1976, the US Bicentennial Year. The founding artists wanted to create a family-friendly event celebrating the symbolic significance of New Year’s, from old to new, that would unite communities while increasing public appreciation of visual and performing arts. Today, First Night is celebrated in more than 150 communities in the US, Canada, England and New Zealand.
The First Night Columbia celebrations begin with a 5k Run/Walk at 4pm, then expand to more than 50 performances and various family-focused activities like story telling, carriage rides, juggling, magic, art, crafting – and then the Grand procession ending with the evening’s finale and fireworks show.
Plan to visit all 12 separate event locations in The District, located in downtown Columbia. The District is just 3 miles from the Wingate by Wyndham Columbia, making it an ideal location for a hotel near First Night Columbia.
This year’s entertainment theme is “It’s All About the Guitar!” and includes an acoustic instrument workshop and a Jimi-Hendrix-style national anthem by Tom Williams. Buy a button and you may be the lucky winner of a Bristol acoustic guitar, a subscription to Flatpick Guitar Magazine, dinner for two at Bleu Restaurant & Wine Bar or music lessons from the Columbia Academy of Music.
When you’re hungry you’ll find yourself smack in the heart of some of the best eateries Columbia has to offer, so you won’t have to pack up the kids and leave The District to find a restaurant. There will be so many culinary choices that even your fussiest eaters will be happy! If you have questions just ask our staff at Wingate by Wyndham hotel in Columbia MO for their recommendations and suggestions.
First Night Columbia may start as your family’s alternative to traditional New Year’s celebrations, but we’re betting the traditional celebrations will soon be the distant second choice alternatives to your new first choice: First Night Columbia!
